Join us at the National Building Museum on Saturday, May 24, 2025 for a Community Day inspired by Deepa Iyer's book We Are The Builders! Activities include storytelling, building care kits, and making art that will support the DC area community. Young people will learn skills, build their confidence, and meet organizations that serve the DC area. All are welcome: babies, toddlers, tweens, and adults!  

Copies of We Are The Builders will be available for participating families (while supplies last).

The Building Readers Club is your guide to explore the world of architecture, engineering, construction, and design found in the pages of children’s books. The primary educational program of the National Building Museum’s exhibition Building Stories, the Club provides suggested books to read and monthly activities to inspire children to find their place within the world and become active participants in their own neighborhoods and built communities.

About Deepa Iyer 

Deepa Iyer is a multi-genre author and community builder based in the Washington DC area. Her books include We Too Sing America: South Asian, Arab, Muslim, and Sikh Immigrants Shape Our Multiracial Future, Social Change Now: A Guide for Reflection and Connection, and We Are The Builders!, a children's picture book on social change. Deepa has over two decades of experience in nonprofit organizations that focus on social justice and solidarity. She is the creator of the widely-used social change ecosystem framework.
