A Maker's Workshop: The Art of Woodworking

DATE: Saturday 2/1/25   TIME: 10:15am - 12:30pm

Join woodworking experts from Woodcraft Supply, LLC for a hands-on workshop inspired by the Museum’s new exhibition, Visible Vault: Open Collections Storage. Participants will have the opportunity to craft their own woodworking project, using essential tools and techniques. The workshop will begin in in Visible Vault with an introduction to the Museum’s Tool Collection, which includes a diverse range of tools spanning different periods and trades. Highlights of the collection include woodworking tools, planes, hand drills, and early power tools from the dawn of the Do-It-Yourself movement in America. After the introduction, participants will learn key woodworking skills, guided by experts in a supportive and safe environment. This workshop is open to all skill levels, from beginners to more experienced woodworkers, with all materials provided. No prior experience is necessary. Participants are encouraged to explore their creativity while gaining hands-on experience with traditional tools and techniques. Recommended for ages 12+ (minors must be accompanied by an adult).

About Your Instructors

Bruce VanSledright is a master furniture maker with over 40 years of woodworking experience. He makes unique heirloom-quality pieces in collaboration with clients. When not teaching classes at Woodcraft of the Washington DC area, he is busy designing and crafting furniture at his one-person shop, VanSledright Woodworking Studio.

Nikki March is a furniture restoration expert who also collects antiques and sells them along with her own unique designs on her website. She teaches classes at Woodcraft of the Washington DC area and is an exhibit designer and installer at the Museum of American History in Washington DC.
